The U.S. economy

Since the last recession, the U.S. economy has more than recovered its lost output, pushing equity markets to new highs, in spite of persistent investor skepticism. This is why it is important to maintain perspective. Despite some headwinds and negative headlines, the economic expansion looks poised to continue.

Economic Expansions and Recessions
The economic recovery has been slow, but resilient

  • Despite political gridlock at home, a soft global economy and intermittent bouts of geopolitical tension, the U.S. economy has steadily grown, creating jobs and helping depressed sectors like housing to recover.
  • Improving consumer confidence and a lack of excesses in the economy suggest that sustainable, mid-cycle growth should continue.
  • The possibility of lighter headwinds to growth and a renewed focus on capital spending by corporations could help boost growth going forward.
