The federal debt

The federal debt problem took decades to create and has been greatly exacerbated by the depth of the recent recession. Although the problem is a big one, there have been steady improvements in recent years.

  • Too often, investors react to uncertainty with paralysis. There are trillions of dollars sitting in cash earning virtually nothing, and far less than inflation.
  • Investors should recognize that risks such as taxes, interest rates and inflation are fundamental to financial planning.
  • Investors should work with their advisors to identify investment strategies to address these risks, rather than earning negative real returns on cash instruments.
