The federal debt

The federal debt problem took decades to create and has been greatly exacerbated by the depth of the recent recession. Though the problem is a big one, it is not impossible to solve over time.

Economic Expansions and Recessions
The U.S. spends too much and takes in too little

  • In 2013, the federal government will only recoup 81% of total spending in the form of tax revenues.
  • While this is clearly unsustainable, bringing down the deficit too quickly would result in fiscal drag, potentially causing GDP growth to stall.
  • Importantly, despite the challenges we face, the U.S. is not Greece - as a wealthy nation with a large tax base and low borrowing costs, the U.S. can gradually fix this problem over time with a balanced approach.
