Consider a SEP IRA if you: Consider a SIMPLE IRA if you:
- Earn most or all income from self-employment

- Are a sole proprietor or own a corporation with no   employees

- Have less than 20 employees

- Have unpredictable business revenues that may not   allow for mandatory contributions each year

- Don't expect employees to invest their own money

- Seek the easiest plan to administer

- Want the option to make potentially large   contributions
- Have 100 or fewer employees

- Won't sponsor any other retirement plans in the   same year

- Want to contribute to your own account as both   employee and employer

- Have predictable business revenues that allow for   mandatory contributions each year

- Expect employees to invest their own money

- Seek to avoid the administrative and regulatory   requirements of 401(k)s

- Want to reduce your taxable income through pre-tax   salary deferrals
